Is it possible to apply for eTA for group travel?

In the case where an agency or company organizes group tours for charter flights in Canada, group requests will not be allowed, each national of countries exempt from the visa and wishes to travel via an agency for a scheduled flight or chartered must obtain his own eTA.

How can I apply for AVE for my minor child?

A child from a visa-exempt country, even at a very young age, must have an eTA application to travel to Canada. Generally, an eTA authorization application for a minor must be solicited by his / her guardian and carried out exactly like that of an adult. However, do not forget to answer ‘YES’ to these two questions:

 

  • « Are you applying for another person? « 
  • « Do you apply on behalf of a minor child? »

What information do I need to complete my eTA application?

First of all, the information you need to fill out is the biographical data that appears on your passport, namely:

  • Last and first name
  • Place and date of birth
  • Marital status
  • Sex
  • Address
  • Nationality
  • Passport number

Then, you will also be asked to answer a few basic questions about your background to determine the status of your eTA application, which can be illustrated by questions about the state of your health and your current job.

Do I have to apply for an AVE if I am from a visa-free country or if I have a green card and a work or study permit?

We can distinguish several situations:

You received your initial permit before August 1, 2015

If you have never made an eTA application and you wish to leave Canada and then return by air.

You received your initial permit before August 1, 2015 or at a later date

You will not be required to make an eTA application if you are a US permanent resident or if you are from a visa-exempt country and your permit application has been approved. An eTA application is issued automatically upon approval of your permit application, it will be linked to your passport and will be valid for a maximum of five years or until the expiry of your passport.

Visa extension issued before May 1, 2017

If you have never made an eTA application and you wish to leave Canada and then return by air.

Visa extension issued May 1, 2017 or at a later date

Once the request for extension of your license is approved, an eTA application will be automatically issued and linked to your passport.

Can I include more than one person in an eTA application?

You do not have the right to include more than one person in an eTA application, including dependents. Each individual person must have their own eTA travel authorization to travel to Canada. Even if a child is on his or her parent’s passport, they must complete a separate eTA application for each child.

I made the request for someone else, can I provide my email address?

When you make an eTA request for a friend or family member, you have the choice to provide either their email address or yours. If you wish to indicate your e-mail address, you will receive in this case all Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) e-mails related to the eTA request of the person concerned during the 5 years of the validity of his / her travel authorization for Canada. On the other hand, if you provide his own email address, he will receive direct IRCC e-mails regarding his eTA request.

I am a Canadian citizen, can I make an AVE application for a friend or non-Canadian family member?

I’m traveling on a chartered flight, will I need an AVE?

Each national of eTA countries wishing to travel or transit through Canada through an agency for a scheduled or chartered flight must obtain their own eTA.

Will I have the opportunity to start an AVE application and come back later to finish?

No, you will not be able to start filling out an eTA form without completing it at one time, the backup option is not available, so to avoid resuming the registration process more than once, make sure that you have :

  • One of the payment methods accepted to pay the 45 CAN $ fee
  • A valid passport issued by a beneficiary country of the Visa Waiver Program
  • A valid email address

Can I use another type of document than a passport to complete my eTA application?

You do not have the right to use a non-passport document to complete the eTA application form. To submit an eTA application in accordance, you must use a valid passport issued by the authorities of your country of nationality or citizenship.

Special case :

Given that there are some countries that do not grant a passport to permanent residents of other countries, only permanent residents of the United States who can not have a passport from their country of origin have the right to submit a passport. For more information check:

How long can I stay in Canada with an approved eTA application?

Whether it is your request or your client’s, an authorized eTA Travel Authorization allows you to travel to Canada for a maximum of six months stay. On the other hand, the exact period of your stay will be decided by the border services officers upon your arrival at the ports of entry.

Can I make changes to an approved AVE application?

Whether for your own request or for a client, modification of an eTA application after approval is not possible. You will be required to submit a new eTA request if you wish to change the contact information in the application.

Can I apply for an EVA for a group or a family?

If you want to go to Canada with family or friends or even colleagues, just choose the type of application you want: Individual, Family or Group. Then you will need to specify the number of adults and the number of children if you apply for more than one person.

Can I check my AVE request before validating it?

The entry of your contact information must be done carefully because the option of verification before the validation of the information is not available at the moment. We advise you to note the information provided elsewhere if you wish to recheck later or keep the detailed form of your application.

I have a travel agency, when do my clients need to apply for an eTA?

Citizens from a Visa-exempt country must apply for an eTA before booking their trip to Canada.

Does my approved eTA Travel Authorization garantee my admission to Canada?

An approved travel authorization allows you to board the aircraft and travel to Canada. However, this authorization does not represent your admission to Canada, the final decision of eligibility will be up to the border services officers upon your arrival at ports of entry.

I got an approved eTA request and then canceled, can I still travel?

An approved travel authorization may be canceled if an immigration officer indicates from your new information that you are inadmissible to Canada. You will receive an email confirming the cancellation of your eTA application and you will not be eligible to travel to Canada. In case you decide to travel to Canada without an eTA Travel Authorization application, your flight will be delayed or you will not be allowed to board the flight to Canada.
In short, to be able to reapply for an eTA application, you will first need to do whatever is necessary to resolve and justify the reasons why your original request was canceled

I am visiting the United States and I want to go to Canada. Do I need an eTA?

Most travelers are required to have a visitor’s visa or an eTA to transit or to travel to Canada.
Your needs depend on:

  • your nationality
  • the mode of transportation you plan to use to travel to Canada
  • the country of issuance of your travel document
  • the type of travel document with which you will travel

Do Canadian citizens with dual citizenship need to have a valid passport?

If you are a Canadian citizen and used to travel or transit through Canada with a non-Canadian passport, you will not be able to do so from November 10, 2016. You must have a valid Canadian passport to board your plane.

If your country requires you to enter and leave this country using a government issued passport, you will still need a valid Canadian passport to board your flight to Canada.

Before your trip, it is imperative to make sure you have both passports when you travel. Find out why you need a valid Canadian passport when traveling by air.

Exception: If you are a US and Canadian citizen with a valid US passport, you do not need a Canadian passport to travel to Canada. On the other hand, it is imperative to carry a piece of identification and meet the basic requirements and recommendations to return to Canada

What information is available under the Access to Protection of Personal Information Act?

It is possible to ask for most of the information available that the government has. Major and important exceptions are Cabinet documents and information that could harm Canada’s economy, federal-provincial relations or international affairs.

Information about individuals can be publicly disseminated only with permission and consent to protect the public interest. Individuals may be able to access their personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act.

Definition of electronic travel authorization?

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is mandatory for visa-exempt citizens and foreign residents traveling to Canada by air. An eTA is a document electronically linked to a traveler’s passport. It is valid for a period of five years or until the expiry of your passport. However, if you change your passport, you must also have a new eTA.

With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada anytime you want but for short stays (normally up to six months). It is not necessary to have an eTA to travel within Canadian territory.

An eTA does not guarantee your entry into Canada. Once you arrive, you will find a border services officer who will check your passport and other documents (US green card). To access Canada’s territories, you must convince the agent that you are legitimate and eligible.

Who can apply under the Privacy Act?

Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents are authorized to make an application under the law on the protection of personal information.

I come from a country that is exempt from visa requirements and I want to study in Canada for less than 6 months. Do I need an eTA?

It is necessary to apply for an eTA if you come from a visa exempted country and wish to travel to Canada by air.

It is not necessary to have an eTA application if you plan to travel to Canada by car, train, bus or boat (including cruise ships).

Note: You do not have to have a study permit to study in Canada for less than six months.

I come from a visa waiver program country or I have a green card from the United States and I want to extend my work or study permit. Do I have to have an eTA application?

No. As from May 1, 2017, eligible applicants receive an eTA application for study and work permit when their eTA application is approved.

Do I need to get an eTA application while I am both a citizen of the United States and a citizen of another country?

No. If your US passport is still valid, you do not need an eTA application or a Canadian visa to enter Canada.
Citizens of the United States and those with Canadian citizenship must have with them the necessary identification to meet the basic requirements to enter Canada.

I am a Canadian citizen. Do I need an AVE to enter Canada?

No, Canadian citizens, including citizens with dual nationality, can not apply for an eTA to enter Canada.

However, it is important and essential to have a valid Canadian passport to fly to Canada.

The only reliable and universally accepted travel document is the valid Canadian passport.

This is proof that you are a Canadian citizen and that you are not subject to immigration control.

I am a Canadian citizen and a citizen of another country. Can I travel to Canada using my non-Canadian passport?

No. To fly to Canada, all Canadian citizens, including those with dual citizenship, are required to present a valid Canadian passport.

Special circumstances:

For example: If in a few days you take a flight or are at the airport and you do not have a Canadian passport.

It is possible to request a special authorization that will give you permission to board your flight with your valid non-Canadian passport.

Citizens of the United States with Canadian citizenship:

If you have a valid US passport, you do not need a Canadian visa or an eTA application to travel to Canada.

All you need to do is have the required identification for US citizens, including Canadian-American citizens, to meet the basic requirements for entering Canada.

 

Can I apply for an eTA while having a refugee travel document?

If you have a refugee travel document to travel to Canada, you are required to have a visitor visa.

Exceptions:

• If you have a valid Canadian travel document for refugees, you are exempt from the visa and the eTA.
• If you do not have a passport and you are a legal and a permanent resident of the United States, you have the option to apply for an eTA with a valid travel document for United States refugees (I-571) valid.

However, if your eTA application is not approved and if it is refused, a temporary resident permit may be considered to allow you to travel to Canada.

Is it likely to have an automatic denial of an eTA because I have been denied entry to Canada in the past?

If you have been denied entry to Canada in the past, this does not mean that you will be denied an eTA application.

Each request is treated case by case.

You can apply for eTA at any time and are encouraged to apply for any previous immigration decisions.

I come from a country without a visa and I want to apply for studies or work permits. Do I have to apply for AVE?

It depends on the situation.

  • If you are applying for a Study Permit or Initial Work Permit before you go to Canada:

Once your application for a study permit or work permit is approved, you will automatically receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) without paying any additional fees.
When your study or work permit is approved, your eTA number will be mentioned in the letter of introduction we send you.
It is important to take note of the number in case you need to contact us.

  • If you wish to apply for an initial work or study permit at a port of entry in Canada:

By Air: You must apply for an eTA before you can fly to Canada.
By car, coach, train or boat (including cruise ships): the eTA request is not mandatory.

I have an ESTA authorization and I am visiting the United States. Can I use my ESTA authorization to enter Canada?

You can not use your ESTA to enter Canada. The eTA is a separate authorization that gives you access to Canadian territory by air since March 15, 2016. Find out if you need to get an eTA.

If I have a VISA or a temporary resident permit to enter Canada. Do I need an eTA?

No. If you already have a valid visa or temporary resident permit, you do not need an eTA to enter Canada.

I am a permanent and legal citizen of the United States (holder of a green card) and I plan to access Canada by car. Am I required to have an eTA?

No. You do not need to have an eTA application when you enter Canada by sea or land. However, if you plan to fly to Canada, an eTA application is required.

Whenever you plan to go to Canada, regardless of the means of transportation, you must present valid proof of permanent resident of the United States status or any of the following documents:

  • A valid green card
  • A stamp of the Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunications System (ADIT) in your passport.

What should I bring to the airport?

The eTA is electronically linked to this passport. You do not have anything to print.
However, to board your flight to Canada, you must have two essential documents:

  • The passport of your country of nationality that you used for your eTA application
  • Proof of legal permanent resident status of the United States:
    • Valid green card
    • the valid ADIT stamp in your passport

When you check in for your flight, the airline will confirm that you have an eTA and proof of status in the United States. When you arrive in Canada, a border services officer will check all your documents.
NOTE: it is necessary to redo a new eTA application if you obtain a new passport.

How can I apply for an eTA to travel to Canada?

To apply for an eTA, you must have a valid passport, a valid credit or debit card and a valid e-mail address.

The fee for an eTA application is « 7 CAD $ ».

Completing the eTA application will only take a few minutes.

An approved eTA is valid for a maximum of five years.

Do I need an eTA to travel to Canada when I have a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CRP)?

No. If you come from a country that is exempt from visa and you have received a document of permanent residence, you do not have to have an eTA.
Before your trip, make sure you make an eTA request.
It is recommended that you inquire whether you are a citizen of a visa country. In this case, a visa will automatically be issued in your passport for your stay in Canada.
In both cases, be sure to travel to Canada with your valid passport and also with your valid residence confirmation document.

When I visit Canada and plan to fly to St-Pierre-et-Miquelon. What document (s) would I need to return to Canada?

It is possible to return to Canada with the documents you originally used to travel as long as they are still valid.
Before you leave, make sure your eTA document or visa is not expired.

I live in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and I am a French citizen who returns by plane from a step other than Canada. Do I have an AVE?
